Liang raised a can of beer to his lips and felt the sharp cold taste pierced his throat as the liquid slided down. Then, he passed the beer can over to Kaiwen, who sat beside him, eyes gleaming in the dim light.
They had struck again. Three European plantation managers dead in Sungai Siput, Perak. The news had rippled through the country like wildfire, prompting the British to declare a state of Emergency in Malaya.
Kaiwen took a long sip, his lips curling into a satisfied grin as the distant sound of laughter and chatter echoed through the camp. Around them, the air buzzed with celebration. The night was thick with the smell of sweat, smoke, and the faint fragrance of jungle air.
It had been a long time since they had last enjoyed a beer. The rare sight of the frothy bottles offered a fleeting escape from the rigours of their daily life.
“One more victory,” Kaiwen muttered, leaning back against the tree trunk, his voice barely audible above the hum of cicadas.
