Chapter 22: Shocking Revelation
Haiyan was seated cross legged on a red plastic stool outside of her house, peeling the skin of a ripe rambutan, when Haixia and Haiyang dashed home with a piece of shocking news.
They revealed that Ms Lin, the school librarian, has just been suspected of illegally supplying the communists with food and herbs from the school’s garden.
During the morning assembly, several police cars had arrived at Sin Min Primary School. All the school teachers could only stare helplessly while Ms Lin was dragged across the school square by the officers.
Ms Lin put up a fight as she kicked and tried to wriggle out of their hold. However, her efforts were all in vain as she was overpowered by the male officers who pushed her into their vehicle and forcefully led her away.
A few days later, news spread that Ms Lin was charged to be guilty and she had been deported to China.
Haiyan found it difficult to swallow the news. Ms Lin had been a dear friend and had imparted much care and knowledge to her during her time at Sin Min Primary School. She had been instrumental in cultivating her love for books and reading.
