catkins / flowers of cottonwood / aments of aspen and willow’s weeping weeds / these golden tail spirits of persephone wind-dancing with a breeze these wisp mothers / halos of hazel / golden clouds of honey-dust sun-spied upon a beam / but as showers shatter air / these rain soaked pollen puffs will cluster / carelessly / like beggar’s velvet / cushioned between each seam and crumbling crevice crack / each empty gap and random sacred space to whisk their way down stream and leave discarded racemes / there / to wither / on mounds of macerated leaves / finally / through peeling bark tight buds will fracture / and there the catkin children form for frozen winter’s wife to raise / her babies / home at last
