The Howling Owl

in upsurge

Then to the streets they flocked,
under the zion skies of the isle dear
to the hearts— the paradise, that once was —
As one in spirits — of hamlets, hordes,
masses ‘n mobs — mighty murders of crows
cawing for rights only human

through the drives mundane ‘n
the square¹ gratis laid for — liberation
in the sweltering heat of April epoch
foraging for that one — flint — to kindle
the polestar and a foothold — through
the murk — of times of hemming and hawing

Exhorting urges bare — infiltrating guts —
famished — hearts despair, souls desolate,
the veins, ‘n minds honed— resurrecting
the symbiosis — dwindling down in
perils of civil apathy — defying
meh excuses to blithe the blind

Loathe the wretched, the one
amongst us —
condoning sacrifices
in blood ‘n sweat to demigods of crime!
descending nights in the hamlin light
beckoning a beacon of hope — for the pithy sight
the eye beholds — diffusing through drops of
evening showers — of yet another humid monsoon!

“The worst illiterate is the political illiterate, he doesn’t hear, doesn’t speak, nor participates in the political events. He doesn’t know the cost of life, the price of the bean, of the fish, of the flour, of the rent, of the shoes and of the medicine, all depends on political decisions. The political illiterate is so stupid that he is proud and swells his chest saying that he hates politics. The imbecile doesn’t know that, from his political ignorance is born the prostitute, the abandoned child, and the worst thieves of all, the bad politician, corrupted and flunky of the national and multinational companies.”
Bertolt Brecht

I am from Sri Lanka. Today I bring my share of the howling to the table. The plight of a country resulting from an assimilation of things gone wrong over decades of mis-governance ruining the island of paradise.

A glimpse of how our days unfurl now is as given below:

  • Protests at the Independent Square¹, Colombo on 05th April, 2022:

  • Long queues for LP cooking gas, fuel, essential drugs and other items scarce in supply:

  • Mass protests defying curfew against declaring a state of emergency in the country:

  • Protests in Colombo over power cuts, economic crisis, social media restrictions etc.:
