The temptation is grand

Gone, gone, gone — but not forgotten
Swallowed up — a late winter snow
Moved all the sidewalks back under banks
And streetwalking becomes the risk again
Ducking and dodging, yanking and pulling -
And praying ardently the dog stays close.

This last winter hell just defines heaven,
As it must must be — elaborate conjugations -
Wide clear sidewalks — linking destinations -
Paths to bus stops or coffee shops or anything
And maybe a bench along the way to sit and rest
In the clear cool air — wearing just a sweater. Oh.

Oh. The temptation is grand, compelling,
Like the urgent desire to see a yellow daffodil
Or a majestic red tulip, or any green thing
That marks the end of drab grey days
Armored coats and insulated gloves,
Ice-covered roads and hidden sidewalks.

And so, April, 2024 and a grand Nor’Easter on the way. The romance of first snow is long gone now. We are ready in New England to move to longer warmer days and sprouting spring.
