Basin of Love
From behind the sun, I hide in daylight
bringing forth all the love, the shade and pride
Uprooted¹, breathing naked in firelight
in the fecund womb of props and stilts wide
tending the younglings, saplings weak ‘n dried
Moon and I, veiling the frail ‘n fragile
in the mangroves to stalwart safe awhile
I suckle the poison in², to spare you
Goddess fertile primed nubile to beguile
nursing lifeforms many in time’s cue…

- This is a dizain on mangroves. Dizain is a form originating from France in the 15th century. It is a ten line single stanza poem, with ten syllables per line, written with the rhyme sequence, ababbccdcd.
- The mangroves harbour many lifeforms supporting highly diverse ecosystems nurturing an incredible array of species providing them favourable habitats for breeding, nesting and for migratory transitions. Home to aerial roots¹ of types prop and stilt, they also serve a vital protective function by filtering sediments and sequestering Carbon² thereby essentially fighting global warming and climate change.
Mangroves are abundant in Sri Lanka bordering lagoons, estuaries and freshwater lakes. And yet, we often fail to appreciate, reinforce and sustain these wonderful hotspots of biodiversity.
