During the week of Fall Break, both DECA and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) planned to visit the Georgia National Fair for their annual trip. However, Hurricane Michael swept through the night before FBLA was scheduled to go, so the trip was cancelled. Fortunately, the weather cleared quickly, so DECA was able to go Oct. 12.

Around 20 DECA members met at Howard High School Friday morning and traveled to the fairgrounds in Perry, Ga. After arriving, the group went to the indoor arena for the DECA rally. The main speaker was James Orrigo, a brain-injury survivor who uses his passion for music to help ill children create their own songs and music videos.

Howard High School won several awards. Howard’s DECA won 5th in the T-shirt design contest for the state and also placed 6th in the state in the brochure contest. Later in the day, Tarin Lewis, the Howard DECA President, won 3rd place in Individual Theme Speech and Rachael Flores placed 9th in Promotional Pitch.

After the rally, the students were free to ride the rides and enjoy the fair food and drinks. The members left at 3 p.m. after a full day of fun.

“I usually hate the fair because the rides make me sick,” said DECA member Jekell Smith, “but I had lots of fun with my friends and would definitely go again.”
