GHP Hopefuls Move to the Next Round

By: Asher Keely Testa

Every summer in the state of Georgia, Berry College hosts the Governor’s Honors Program (GHP). GHP is a month-long elite academic camp for students who excel in a certain academic field. Well over 3,000 students apply every year, but only around 600 are accepted.

This year, Howard has a large number of students advancing past the county level. Eunice Chon, a sophomore nominated for Social Studies, said, “I’m only a sophomore, so this is all a new thing for me. But I’ve been getting help from Ben Giglio who has been through this before.”

“We build off each other,” Chon said, “It’s not nasty or super competitive. We’re working together.”

Ben Giglio, who is a junior applying in Social Studies for the second time, said that students interested in applying for GHP next year should “work on interview skills, including body language like handshaking.” Giglio also said, “Try to truly show yourself. They want to see a character.”

The students from Howard who made it to the next round are: Harley Patterson, Cassidy Hall, Emma Quintal, Ben Giglio, Skyler Sneeder, Eunice Chon and Katie Kasowski. They will be notified this Friday, Jan. 25 on whether they are State level semifinalists; which will qualify them for interviews and testing at Berry College in Rome in February.

Good luck to all our Huskies on the next round!
