Displayed on the doors and throughout the Howard High Library is a somewhat misleading sign. In a bold font is printed the words, “Pick a ‘Weed’ to Read.”

No, it is not what you think. In fact, the “weed” is actually books the librarians have “weeded” from the shelves to clear room for new arrivals.

The books are located on top of the magazine shelf close to the doors and circulation desk. All of the books are completely free and ready to be taken home by an enthusiastic reader!

“It keeps our collection fresh with quality material,” said media specialist Susan Fox. “Back in the day it was all about quantity, but now we can start focusing more on quality.”

There is no limit on how many books each student can take, but the librarians urge that you only take what you are sure you will read (and what your parents will allow).

Happy reading and enjoy your “weed!”
