The days are edging closer, as one of the most exciting parts of the school year arrives…PROM!

Howard High School is planning an exciting and memorable prom for juniors and seniors on April 30, from 7–10 pm, at the Macon Terminal Station, after two years without one due to the pandemic.

After those disappointing two cancellations, Howard is finally ready to get the ball rolling again with our annual Junior/Senior prom. Other than graduation, prom is usually rated as the most special event of senior year. Juniors who attend usually agree as well.

Howard’s art teacher Courtney Bath is in charge of prom, making her responsible for booking the location, music, catering, choosing the prom theme, decorations, and much more. This is Bath’s first year being in charge of prom.

“It’s been different… but I enjoyed it, and I plan on doing it again,” said Bath.

Due to COVID, there have been restrictions and delays, she said. Bath had to hold off on planning and set up until this semester instead of the first semester, when most of the planning would usually occur.

“We didn’t know how masks would work, or the allowed capacity,” Bath said, until late in the new year.

The Terminal Station in downtown Macon has its own requirements, along with the Bibb County School System requirements. As of right now, masks are not required and are instead optional, but anything can change.

Bath said one of the best parts of prom for teachers, all of whom participate in either planning, set up, chaperoning, or clean up, is that the event provides “a good chance to interact with other teachers because the past couple of years we haven’t been able to see each other as much.”

Ms. Bath is not the only one looking forward to prom night. Seniors Deontae Harris and Jada Antley are also excited for this big night.

This will be Harris’s first prom, and he is discovering that getting ready can bring pressure.

“The most stressful part by far is finding a tuxedo,” Harris said. “ It’s hard to find a tux someone else doesn’t have. You want to be original and stand out.”

Harris is not aware of the exact style of his tux yet, but he does know that the colors he wants to wear are black and gold.

Jada Antley also has her vision mapped out for her special night.

“My dress is a rose gold,” Antley said, “open back, tight fitted mermaid dress.”

Antley said she plans to enjoy the night with her friends.

“We have to arrange times, pictures, and dinner,” she said.

Antley and Harris agree that they are looking forward to seeing everyone at the event.

The 2022 Met Gala prom is nearly here — enjoy it!
