Caffeine is something that has found its way into our daily lives; whether it’s a cup of coffee to start your day or an energy drink to keep you going. We all rely on it. While it can have its benefits, it has its drawbacks as well.

What is Caffeine?

Caffeine is a stimulant that enhances the activity of the brain. It is found in everyday things like coffee, tea, sodas, chocolate, and more.

“It works by stimulating the brain and central nervous system, helping you stay alert and prevent the onset of tiredness.” — Healthline.com stated

How Does it Work?

When ingested caffeine quickly works itself from the gut to the bloodstream and is then broken down. It works by blocking the functions of adenosine (a neurotransmitter that relaxes and causes you to feel tired throughout the day). By blocking this neurotransmitter, it reduces the affects you +would feel from being tired.

Benefits of Caffeine?

Moderate amounts of caffeine can increase alertness, physical energy, and can help to improve mood for short periods of time.

According to Dr. Julian Earls, a local neurologist, regular use of caffeine can decrease depression and potentially protect the brain from diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Disadvantages of Caffeine?

It can cause a wide array of side effects and causes the brain to over stimulate. Some of these side effects include anxiety, irritability, difficulty concentrating, insomnia, and headaches. It can cause elevated heart rate, and palpitations.

Large amounts of caffeine early in life can impede cognitive functions later in life. You can also become addicted to caffeine over time which can lead to withdrawal symptoms like headaches and shakiness.

Alternatives to Caffeine?

There are many alternatives to caffeine that will allow you to feel energized.

Mrs. Brock, our school nurse said, “eating an apple can allow you to feel just as energized due to the B vitamins in apples.”

Other alternatives include drinking enough water and eating the right diet. Other drink options include ginseng, coconut water, sparkling water, and hot apple cider.
