One of the most important skills I teach my clients is to practice mindfulness. It evolved from Buddhist meditation but it is so much more than just a meditative practice. Mindfulness can help you effectively manage stressful, anxious and depressing thoughts and brighten your day. Combined with hypnosis, it can transform your life in a very positive manner. The core tenet of being mindful is to exist and appreciate the present moment. The future is uncertain and can cause anxiety. The past is often regret, which can spawn depression. Living in the present moment and appreciating the now is almost always better than those two choices.

I want to share a mindfulness technique developed by my brother, who is also a hypnotist. This quick and easy technique can free you from an ordinary vascular headache just as it it starting up. The best part is that you can use it over and over again, and be headache free from now on! Note: the language here is very specific, and needs to be that way to be effective, so don’t deviate from it. Whenever you feel a headache starting up, raise your hand and point to the area where it is beginning. Then say “I’ve got a little something going on here.” This vague language will cause your brain to search through possibilities of what “a little something” actually is. Is it a headache? Is it something else? Is it nothing? This moves the subconscious out of its “headache autopilot.”

The next step is to be non-judgmental about the headache. You simply say, “Whatever this is, it’s not good, it’s not bad. It’s not important, it’s not unimportant.” This phrase will neutralize your headache in just a few seconds.

It’s that easy. This will work with almost every ordinary headache and sometimes even works for migraines as they are just starting. Give it a try.
