Do People Really Have Ribs Removed?

I have a floating rib missing. It never bothered to grow. Every so often when reading up on similar deformities (don’t worry, it doesn’t affect me at all) I come across rib removal surgery.

Have people really had ribs removed just to get a narrower waist?

It seems that the answer is yes, and it’s not in the past tense.
