A Final Season for the Mutated Monster Hunter

From Andrzej Sapkowski’s six-volume series (plus two short story collections) to video games, comic books and even the stage, The Witcher has made quite an impact in the realm of epic fantasy productions. In 2019, a new adaptation was developed by Netflix to bring these characters to life on an even grander scale.

Loosely based on Sapkowski’s first three novels (The Last Wish, The Sword of Destiny and Blood of Elves), Netflix begins the story with the first two seasons full of monster hunting, character development and contending political factions. As we reach season three, we move onward to the fourth book, Time of Contempt, where the animosity between these factions continues to fester to a boiling point. Caught in the fray and persistently neutral in the world’s disputes is Geralt of Rivia, a renowned Witcher, and Cirilla, the sole Princess of Cintra.

Unfortunately, word has it we are losing the Geralt we’ve come to love. Henry Cavill (also well-known for his role as Superman) is allegedly at odds with the Netflix writing team regarding the show’s alignment with the story’s source material. It seems the writers are choosing to veer too far from the book’s original content and therefore, Henry is choosing to part ways. The image below is a not-so-subtle hint at where the audience’s opinion lies in regards to Cavill’s departure after season three (we’re with Henry).

Whether you agree with Henry or with Netflix in this dispute, I’d still recommend watching the first three seasons. And just an FYI, Netflix has split the third season so the second half will not be released until July 27th (sigh).

Although I can nit-pick on some of the acting and a handful of goofy costume designs, I think Netflix’s adaption does well to prime further investment in the ecosystem that this show was built upon (where I believe the better content lies).

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

If the books make up this story’s foundation, then the games are its launching pad. One of the most popular and critically acclaimed RPG games ever produced, The Witcher: Wild Hunt creates a dynamic open-world landscape that ensnares the player in its beauty and expansiveness. Although there are many other games of The Witcher that should be noted, I’m focusing on Wild Hunt particulary because of its impact in the gaming world and its dominate standing among all of The Witcher video games.

Take a look at Gamespot’s review:

Apart from the visual overhaul (although somewhat dated, the gameplay is far above par), one can also expect thrilling combat scenarios, an abundance of side quests, well written dialogue accompanied by excellent voice acting, and an engaging storyline. I have yet to play this game, you can bet it’s queued next after everything I’ve read.

The Book of the Week

I guess I have Witcher fever, because I also plan to read the entire Witcher series after I complete my current book series. With everything now orbiting the books, how can I not? Research suggests that although published second, the first book in this exemplary series is The Last Wish.

Questing alongside Geralt as he vanquishes monstrous foes and saves the lands from evil forces is something I can definitely get into. I can’t wait to read through these books and playing the game as well. Expect an update upon their completion!
