Research studies (and my personal experience with reversing autoimmune diseases in my patients) show that most autoimmune diseases are also strongly linked to depression and trauma. In one study, 64% of people hospitalized with Autoimmune Disease had at least 1 childhood trauma.

Also important to note, is that chronic pain is traumatic in itself, which can create or perpetuate existing trauma, depression, and anxiety. Mood disorders like depression, trauma, and anxiety actually show the same elevation in inflammatory markers and disruption of cortisol levels that we see in people with inflammatory disorders causing pain and arthritis, whether it is lupus, fibromyalgia, or rheumatoid arthritis. So it is likely that on a cellular level, they are very similar diseases.

Now, many celebrities are coming out and talking about battles with mental health issues related to trauma such as Lady Gaga and Selena Gomez, and we are looking at how trauma can be a trigger for autoimmune disease. Are they tied together?

There has been an enormous focus on fibromyalgia and depression and anxiety, so much so it is considered by many doctors as a depressive illness rather than a separate inflammatory or autoimmune illness. One study showed that more than half the subjects they interviewed with fibromyalgia had at least one sexual trauma. Another showed PTSD rates are 5-fold higher in people with fibromyalgia than the general population.

With over 70k followers, autoimmune disease specialist, and MD, Brooke Goldner (www.goodbyelupus.com) has successfully inspired many through her own journey overcoming Lupus. Now, she coaches thousands of individuals through their illnesses using her disease reversing protocol, and her 6-week protocol was just recently published in the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention.

“Effective treatment for chronic inflammatory diseases like fibromyalgia and even lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, must include: anti-inflammatory nutrition, lifestyle modifications to include healthy coping skills for mood including exercise, meditation, gratitude journals, and just having a little bit of fun!” says Brooke Goldner, MD, autoimmune disease specialist, who has helped reverse disease in thousands across the nation. Additionally, she adds that “…Emotional support to process trauma with a specialist like a psychiatrist or a therapist specialized in trauma,” is also essential for people who also need to heal from emotional trauma.

Most importantly, however, Dr. Goldner says that anti-inflammatory nutrition from a hyper-nourishing diet is the key resource to disease reversal. She encourages each of her clients, friends, and family to “eat high amounts of high nutrient vegetables like dark leafy greens & cruciferous vegetables, omega-3 like from flaxseeds and chia seeds, and stay hydrated with a lot of water as well as avoid inflammatory foods like meat, dairy, processed foods and sugars, and oils.”

Dr. Brooke Goldner is a best-selling author, the founder of www.GoodbyeLupus.com, creator of the Hyper-nourishing Nutrition Protocol for Lupus Recovery, and is the author of 3 best-selling books, Goodbye Lupus, Goodbye Autoimmune Disease, and Green Smoothie Recipes to Kick-Start Your Health and Healing. Dr. Goldner was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Nephritis with stage IV kidney disease at 16 years old and made a startling recovery from her disease at 28 years old using her protocol, which uses supermarket foods.

She has been symptom-free ever since, with normal lab results and no trace of disease in her body. Now, she educates physicians and patients on how to heal and achieve vibrant health using her protocol and supermarket foods. Dr. Goldner’s Hyper-nourishing Healing Protocol has helped patients with Lupus and a multitude of other diseases.
