Chenab Bridge: The World’s highest railway bridge under construction in the Himalayan region of Jammu and Kashmir
Yes, you heard it right:Indian engineers are working hard in the Himalayas to build the world’s highest railway bridge which is expected to be 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower when completed by 2016.The bridge is being constructed in the Reasi district of of Jammu and Kashmir.
The construction of the bridge started in 2002 when Sh Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister. It was stopped in 2008 when the project was announced to be unsafe. However, the construction restarted in 2010, and has now been declared a national project.

Cost break up
The railway line has been taken up as a National Railway project will for the first time connect Kashmir to the rest of India.The bridge is designed as a massive steel arch — a first in India. To resist the challenge of disturbing weather, the steel being used will withstand temperatures as low as -20C and wind speeds of 200 kmph, while being economical in cost. Forces of nature apart, the engineers also face the challenge of construction in one of the most complicated and isolated terrains, while also ensuring that the flow of the river is not disturbed.
