20 April 1920

On this day 100 years ago, Gandhi wrote a letter to Balkrishna Bhave and Prabhudas Gandhi. Balakrishna Bhave was the brother of Vinoba Bhave, a Gandhian and advocate of nonviolence and human rights in post-independent India, while Prabhudas Gandhi was a follower of Gandhi since the latter’s time in South Africa. Gandhi informed them that he would come to a decision on whether he should travel to England in relation to garnering support for the Khilafat movement by the end of day.

He also told them in the letter that he was with Jawaharlal Nehru and Saraladevi at the Ashram. The latter would go onto the become a renowned freedom fighter and the first woman from Orissa to join Gandhi’s Noncooperation movement, and the former would become India’s first prime minister.
