After the underwhelming sales and essential flop of the previous Nintendo console, the Wii U, the hype was beyond real for their next console and the first game system to hybridize a home console with a handheld system. When it was finally unveiled and the world got a look at the Nintendo Switch, the world erupted, and it was almost impossible to get one for the first few weeks following its release.

The system is currently suffering from one big problem that most systems face at launch: there is almost nothing to play! Of course the system saw the launch of the near perfect game that is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the formula-flipping fighter Arms, and the re-release of Mario Kart 8 as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe with some new content. But it will finally shine once these beloved franchises get their turn on the fresh-faced hybrid console!

1. Splatoon 2

Developer: Nintendo

Release Date: July 21, 2017

Genre: Shooter

The delightfully spunky and overly stylish squids are back for another round in the sequel to the award-winning splatter shooter. This time around the inklings are taking their style and weaponry to the next level. Splatoon 2 adds a bevy of new weapons and customization options as well as the highly publicized Salmon Run, which is essentially an ink based horde-mode. The hype is real and the hopes high for this sequel!

2. Super Mario Odyssey

Developer: Nintendo

Release Date: October 27, 2017

Genre: Platformer

Nintendo’s Italian stallion is back in what is probably his biggest adventure yet! Set in the vein of similar 3D Mario games such as Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine (which are my two favorite Mario games I might add), this looks to be the “return to formula” that so many fans of the plumber have been waiting for! The unique possession-like mechanic is sure to keep the gameplay fresh as Mario can now become most of his enemies with the flick of his hat! Time will tell if the Plumber will dominate the newest console as he has in the past.

3. Metroid Prime 4

Developer: Unconfirmed

Release Date: 2018

Genre: Shooter

While there is almost nothing to go on about this game, the fact that it has been confirmed is enough reason to celebrate! The return of the popular shooter franchise has been a long time coming and one that fans are more than excited about! While all we have to be hyped about is a single trailer that reveals nothing more than the games logo, it was enough to hype up a crowd of hungry gamers. Here is hoping Metroid Prime 4 doesn’t leave those gamers with the same sour taste as Metroid: Other M did.

4. “Kirby for Switch” (Working Title)

Developer: Unconfirmed

Release Date: 2018

Genre: Platformer

Everyone’s favorite pink puffball is back on console for the first time since Kirby & The Rainbow Curse back in 2015. The visuals of this entry in the popular franchise are colorful and fun and the game seems to bring back the power combining mechanic seen only in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, way back in 2000! Personally I was a huge fan of the mechanic and to see it come back along with the ability to befriend enemies is truly the setup for a great and memorable trip through Dreamland!

5. Fire Emblem Warriors

Developer: Team Ninja, Intelligent Systems, Omega Force

Release Date: Fall 2017

Genre: Hack and Slash

In 2014, Hyrule Warriors graced our Wii Us and that fast-paced hack and slash gameplay finds its way into the realms of Fire Emblem for Fire Emblem Warriors. Not only does this Dynasty Warriors/ Fire Emblem crossover game combine slaying hundreds of foes in seconds with the war torn country side backdrop of the Fire Emblem Universe, but it brings the most familiar faces to ever raise up a weapon in the series to the battle for you to control. It also adds the pair-up mechanic that has become a staple in the series allowing you to use two characters in tandem. It is shaping up to be one of the best games released on the console yet.

6. “Yoshi for Switch” (Working Title)

Developer: Unconfirmed

Release Date: 2018

Genre: Platformer

Everyone’s favorite little dinosaur makes his Switch debut next year and it couldn’t come soon enough! The little bit of gameplay that was shown off at E3 2017 was enough to wet our whistle, but enough to sate our hunger for another adorable adventure as the world’s most adorable dinosaur. The handcrafted art style sets it apart from other entries in the series, and seeks to take another step forward from the very successful Yoshi’s Wooly World!

7. Pokken Tournament XD

Developer: Bandai Namco Studios

Release Date: September 22, 2017

Genre: Fighting

Pokken Tournament is the only game on this list that is just a deluxe edition port of a Wii U game and nevertheless I am excited! I haven’t hid my love for this game at all and I have found that it even helps to revitalize the fighter genre! This time around, some new combatants show up to fight along with some new gameplay options! All of that aside, the ability to play anywhere on the Switch makes this a must have for any fans of fighters, Pokemon, or great gaming on the go.
