CLIFTON, NJ — Contrary to popular outcry, Nabisco’s new onion flavored Oreo is a surprise hit with consumers. Target Superstore locations in Clifton and Vauxhall, NJ have reported to be sold out since Tuesday and are awaiting a new shipment. “We’ve had people asking all week.” said Thomas Van Luse, assistant manager at the Vauxhall branch. Van Luse added “I thought they would taste like shit but I love them, I really do.”

The weeks leading up to the release of the flavor were met with outcry and disgust from social media. Foodie blog Eater called it “An affront to taste.” while celebrity chef and TV personality Tom Colicchio simply called it “Evil”. Hashtags like ‘#onionsarenofuns’ and ‘#tounguerape’ became popular on sites like Twitter and Facebook.

The newest flavor appears to be particularly popular with baby-boomers who prefer a less-sweet cookie. New commercials featuring actor Jamie Lee Curtis as well as a promotional tie-in with CBS are expected to see a further boosts in sales.

‘America’s Favorite Cookie’ has found great success in a recent marketing push that produced limited-edition varieties such as ‘S’mores’ and ‘Birthday Cake’. “They love it. They can’t get enough!” said Nabisco associate director of food science Carl Wint. “They’ll buy anything we throw at them and they’ll beg for more. More I tell ya, on their knees even!” Wint added that the success allows Nabisco to open the floodgates on their new savory varieties. Consumers can expect to see flavors like ‘Clam Chowder’, ‘White Gravy’ and ‘Deviled Eggs’ within the coming weeks.
