Ezra’s fingers banged away on a laptop trying to come in under deadline.

His phone buzzed, but he ignored it.

Then the cabin phone rang. That worried him. Maybe three people knew that number.

“Hello?”

“I have the paper in my hands right now,” a low morose voice said.

“I…I told you. They want to keep things quiet.”

“I said I wanted people to know.”

“It’s out of my hands.”

There was a long silence.

“Then their blood is on yours.”

“Who’s blood?” he asked but the line went dead.

Ezra grabbed his coat and headed for the door.

“Did he say what he was going to do?” the police chief asked.

“No,” Ezra said.

“Do you think he’s going to kill someone else?”

“I think that’s exactly what’s going to happen. I’m worried he’s going to go bigger.”

“How do you go bigger than two dead girls?”

At the same time the small town was filing into the stands for that night’s football game.
