I jumped on the wagon and watched that flick — The Social Media Dilemma. Though I had long decided to delete all personal social media, it still struck a chord with me in terms of my relationship with my phone.

I was initially planning to watch it with my SO, but he kept saying he was tired after work and he didn’t want to “watch anything sad.”

And by sad — we’re ultimately all my SO when what we really mean is we’re tired of all the depressing, disheartening, anguish inducing and disappointing slog 2020 is throwing at us.

I get it. Totally valid.

I carved out some time to watch it alone — and the outlook it leaves you with isn’t a pretty one (ominous background music and editing aside).

At this point, more than half the world, about 51%, is said to use social media in some capacity. And as screen time goes up, there seems to be a negative correlation between usage and general life satisfaction. Feelings of happiness and self-esteem go down, judgment is impaired, as FOMO (fear of missing out) generally spikes — and that’s only the tip of the iceberg.
