Vine, Why It Failed? And Does “V2” Even Have a Chance? Part: 3
For my third post I tried to do some research about what the most popular Viners had to say about Vine shutting down. So I ended up finding a video made by DeStorm Power back in 2016, who in my opinion was a pretty decent Viner who did comedy Vines, most of his content was good. As of today DeStorm has 6.1 Million followers on Vine. It’s true that maybe if Vine was still around, he could have gained a few more million followers. Anyways, if we compare DeStorm’s numbers to the numbers of someone like King Bach (Viner with the most followers) who ended his time at Vine with a total of 16.2 Million followers. We can tell that the difference was notecable and maybe if we were to hear what King Bach had to say about Vine the story might be different.
Anyways, DeStorm starts his video by stating that most people stopped using the app over a year ago. (Again, the video I’m using is from 2016). DeStorm continues the video by saying that “he touched millions of people and made millions way before the app was created”, which only makes him sound cocky for no reason. I honestly didn’t even know who he was before Vine and I didn’t really remember who he was until I started doing research.
He then goes on and talks about all these Viners and how they can make up to eight figures with their content “TV shows, commercials, movies and slaying other platforms”. I mean, it all makes sense, I know that if the audience think they are funny and they make good content. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what platform they are using as long as they stay true to themselves.
He continues his video by accusing Vine of “not giving a sh*t about their creators”, I guess what he meant with this is that Vine didn’t care about the content creators. DeStorm then says that the people at Vine were the most complicated people to reach. To the point that he didn’t have an email to contact them in case something went wrong. He also made it clear that Vine didn’t pay their creators, that they had to reach out to third party companies to make some money since at the end of the day Vine wasn’t monetized, it sucks to hear people like DeStorm that clearly could be doing something else as a living say so many negative things about an app that did all it could. He then mentioned that in his prime he can make up to $50,000 off one Vine. So I don’t really understand what he was complaining about, since he was clearly making a living out of Vine. DeStorm also mentions that Vine tried to get more involved with their top creators when it was already too late and that everyone was using other platforms to create content. Apparently Vine told the top creators that they were less than 1% of the users of the app and so that was the reason why he didn’t really care much about them because they believed they were going to be fine without them. “DeStorm then said that, Vines mistake was not realizing that 1% was generating 95% of the views”. These two statements confused me, because from a business perspective I’m sure that Vine was aware of this, so I don’t really see why they would such a hateful thing. Lastly, he also said that Vine was the worst run platform he has ever witness. This last statement made me question, if he was so unhappy, why didn’t he just stop using the app and moved on from it?
DeStorm also mentioned that Viners were very powerful people, “we controlled pop-culture, we had every celebrity in the app, we controlled what was funny and what songs were hot”. He even goes as far as to say that Viners molded the millennials. He also says that the Vine creators didn’t do much but create a boring app and that they made Vine the amazing app it ended up being.
I honestly did love the app, it really sucks that it had to shut down and I really hope it wasn’t all because of selfish people like DeStorm who pretty much complaint about everything.
I want to end this post with this quote from DeStorm “Vine didn’t die people, Vine committed suicide”.
