When a lottery system was introduced in Taiwan, active stock trading volume dropped by 25%.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told trading is gambling. Especially by my best friend.

It became my pet peeve. Someone would whisper those words, and I’d think, I’m about to end this man’s whole career.

But after trading for a few years, I’ve stopped taking the belief personally. I even stopped plotting the demise of those who uttered it.

I’ve come to realize that markets and casinos really are quite alike. They offer success and prosperity to their participants while quietly operating on a skewed landscape.

That isn’t to say you should avoid either one. I’m a fervent trader and don’t see that ever changing. But when it comes to the markets, people tend to oversimplify their conceptions of the playing field.
