The Iron Yard — Week 6
Halfway done! It makes me both excited and incredibly nervous to say those words. We are learning Rails and other small things for the next three weeks. This week was pretty eventful as we started learning Rails this week.
Monday: Today we has a guest speaker Anne come and talk to up about making gems. We actually got to make our own gem! It was pretty exciting! After the gem demo we learned about the basics or Rails and how everything fits together.
Tuesday: Really dove into Rails today. We learned all about MVC(Model, View, Controller). Rails is great! Probably my favorite thing that we have learned so far. After going to Ruby for Good, Rails seems so easy. Because of what I’m learning in class now, I can make sense of what I learned at Ruby for Good which is great!
Wednesday: Got to visit Bronto today! The nice folks at Bronto told us about their company and showed us around a bit. One of their employees was an Iron Yard grad and we got to talk to him. Great experience and a huge thank you to Bronto for the opportunity! Today we got to work on a Reddit clone. I am calling my Saiddit. I am pretty excited about it because it feel like we are actually working on making something that could be a real product.
Thursday: Worked more on Saiddit today. Saiddit is so much fun with Rails. I managed to look back at an old project that we did in Sinatra last week, and man was I surprised by how few files it had. I have really grown accustomed to the ease that Rails that gives you!
Friday: We had the option to continue working on our redditclone today or to start a new project. I chose to continue working on Saiddit so that I can have a finished working product for once! I added voting to the app as well as the ability to see who posted what. Also did some CSS work so that Saiddit will actually look nice! Worked Sat and Sun on Saddit as well.
