A Turkish orthopedic surgeon with over twenty years of practice in Istanbul can’t use his medical credentials in New York. An Italian communication professional with two master’s degrees job-hunted for 10 years to find gainful employment. A Mexican financial analyst had no choice but to work as a ride-share driver to earn a living in New Jersey. Even Afghanistan’s former finance minister can endure career setbacks in the United States; he now drives for Uber in Washington DC.

Rather than isolated cases, these stories are all around us, and all over the USA. The protagonists — nearly 2 million people — are immigrant professionals whose invaluable credentials and abilities become either useless or invisible in the States. The labor market is simply not designed to match them to good positions.

As a result, too many newcomers end up either unemployed or working at “jobs for which they’re overqualified, overeducated or both,” I wrote for NJSpotlight in 2017.

Program

Because I’m a veteran of the immigration experience, I know how difficult it can be to learn how to succeed professionally. That’s why I created The JobUp, a dual-track continuing education course and work-readiness accelerator to teach internationally educated immigrants — especially Italians — how to unlock the U.S. hiring process.

Mission

Our mission is to take the guesswork out of job-seeking and equip participants with the knowledge and the mentoring they need to navigate the labor market and succeed as new Americans. That’s how they come away with a concrete understanding of how to job-hunt and with actionable skills that boost their confidence.

Our alumni not only get calls from recruiters, but also get the jobs.

The JobUp is part of the Global Talent Leadership Network (GTLN), a professional immigrant integration incubator run by World Education Services

Course Description

This is a college-level continuing education course of eight, 3-hour-long, immersive, and interactive online classes. It is taught in America-English to boost language confidence, improve communication skills, and expand vocabulary.

Participants come away with an understanding of how to develop the tools and the mindset necessary to succeed in their job search, and be proactive about their professional goals. Students are encouraged to build community in a safe and supportive learning environment.

Some unique features of The JobUp are:

A) Guest speakers who contribute specialized knowledge and interact with students through stimulating Q&As.

B) Personalized professional integration resources, both local and national.

C) Weekly, individual feedback from the teacher to maximize the learning experience.

Requirements for enrollment:

  • Be 18 years or older.
  • Be on time and commit to weekly attendance. Classes start at 5:30 pm ET. Students are welcome to check-in 15 minutes earlier. Students depend on one another for class exercises, and peer-to-peer safety. The JobUp utilizes a community-building approach to foster belonging and enhance learning.
  • Advanced English level. Applicants will provide a writing sample with the registration form.
  • Schedule a brief phone conversation to complete the language evaluation.
  • Be able to access the Zoom class from a computer — either a laptop or a desktop. Using a mobile device is not recommended.

Who are The JobUp’s students

Participants of The JobUp are formally educated immigrant professionals who acquired their education abroad (teachers, lawyers, creatives, pharmacists, psychologists, artisans, marketers, and others).

What The JobUp is not

The JobUp is a work-readiness accelerator, not a job-placement service.
