Rumor Mill: Mavericks, Suns to pursue Restricted Free Agent Aaron Gordon in Summer
Orlando Magic power forward Aaron Gordon will reportedly be pursued from the Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns and Indiana Pacers in the 2018 NBA offseason.
On Wednesday, Sean Deveney of the Sports News made a note that Gordon will likely become a big “focus” of the market once big names like LeBron James and Paul George are signed with teams.
Aaron Gordon, 22-years-old from San Jose, California, is enjoying a breakout season with the Orlando Magic. Currently, he’s averaging 18.4 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists while his shooting is 34.6 from beyond the arc in 39 game appearances this season. These numbers represent his career bests, so far.
While Gordon’s individual improvement is good for him individually, the team itself has not seen any improvements. Right now, the Magic are tied for the league’s fourth-worst record at 18–39 coming out of the All-Star weekend.
As young and athletic as Gordon is, it would be surprising to see the Magic let him go. The team is projected to have over $16.4 million in practical cap spare during the off season, per Spotrac. Even if the Magic were to let him go, Gordon playing alongside All-Star Victor Oladipo doesn’t sound too shabby on the Indiana Pacers roster. Even the Dallas Mavericks could be a good fit for the Gordon with break-out rookie Dennis Smith Jr. and host of other experienced players.
