To combat misinformation, Twitter will be broadcasting local TV news

For quite a while now, we’ve known that Twitter has a big problem with spreading of misinformation. The social media company will begin partnering with local TV news channels to broadcast news alongside the timeline when tragedy strikes. Twitter tested the feature yesterday where it streamed news coverage of the school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Miami.

As reported by Buzzfeed News, once you click on the live videos on the timeline, you will then be taken to another timeline that’s populated by tweets about the current events that are happening on the news. One of the downsides to this is that the tweets shown are picked by an algorithm. For the source of video, Twitter will be forging partnerships with local news channels.

In a statement to Buzzfeed News, Twitter’s GM for video Kayvon Beykpour said:

“We’re continuing to work on new ways we can surface credible content and relevant information to help people stay informed. By pairing live video with the conversation on Twitter, there is no faster way to see what’s happening in the world.”

At the peak of coverage yesterday on Twitter, the live coverage had some 50,000 viewers.
