Last Friday, we announced to the world that the global map is coming. The same map you’ve been helping us build. There was a load of you who signed up to join the beta community and we quickly wanted to welcome you all.

You’re now part of a growing community committed to building products that help people have better, safer adventures in the outdoors. Now for that update…

TL;DR — You’ll find two key adventure discovery improvements in this update. The first is the introduction of our filtering system that sorts adventures by length, difficulty and proximity. The second has added annotations to routes so their name and difficulty are visible on the map as you browse. If you’ve heard enough, you can dive straight in here.

The mobile beta is nearly ready! If you’re already a member of the community drop us an email at earlyaccess@fatmap.com letting us know you’d like to test it and what device you have (iOS or Android).

If you’re not a FATMAP beta tester yet, you can apply here.

Finding the adventure for you…

You’ve been asking if we could make the adventures easier to find.

Everyone has different skill and aspiration levels, but even conditions and weather can dictate what you’re looking for.

We’ve introduced the first set of parameters you can now filter and sort the adventures by. Proximity, difficulty, length and name are all easily found with the filter. You’ll find it in the top right-hand corner of the adventure list panel.

Understanding routes when browsing

Often we are just looking to be inspired. Spending hours just browsing maps looking for attractive terrain and wild routes.

We’re always making it easier to get the information you want whilst ensuring the map doesn’t distract you by having too much information there.

The picture above shows the face below the famous Aiguille du Midi, Chamonix. With a variety of difficulties, you can quickly see by the colour and icons the potential routes you may take.

Things to ask yourself when testing…

  • Are the filter/sort options useful? What other parameters would you like to see/sort by?
  • Are the route annotations useful and clear? Do they help you identify suitable routes?
  • Is map navigation easy? What would you change?

Remember, do not share anything from the beta product as it’s still a closed environment. For any questions, insights or opinions, you can hit the ‘FEEDBACK’ tab on the right hand side of the screen or drop us an email by hitting reply.
