Dealing with fear is common when you’re an extreme athlete, but it’s an emotion that exists within all of us. It can empower or paralyse, but if you know how to embrace it and take the right steps to avoid its damaging effects, it can become an essential part of your toolkit.

Xavier De Le Rue has dropped into some of the most committing lines out there. Over the years, he’s developed his own way of evaluating his skills against the risk, knowing when to turn around and visualising any and all dangers (amongst other unique methods).

No matter your experience level, fear will come into play when making decisions in the backcountry. And you know what they say… it’s not about who you are, it’s about how you use it.

“I break down how I overcome “bad fear” which is limiting, but also how I use “good fear” to help me to make the right decision in the mountains.”
— Xavier De Le Rue
