Planning your first ski tour can be daunting. Not only are you entering backcountry terrain but you’re also route planning — both are difficult skills and an initial barrier for anyone looking to explore the mountains.

The key to planning any ski tour is preparation and that requires gathering lots of different types of information. Not only that but you also need to interpret it in a way that can leave you with some sensible options for the day.

Xavier De Le Rue explains the different methods he uses to get information, especially about the terrain, and make a plan for a day exploring and touring in the mountains.

Visualising terrain information on the new global FATMAP

As Xavier says, digital maps help us understand the terrain in a more intuitive way. With FATMAP, we use 3D to make it easier to not only visualise things like altitude and steepness but to also allow you to plan beautiful and interesting routes.

At the end of this article, we’ll put some links to use the new global map. It’s still in beta, but you can take the tips from part 7 of How To: XV and start planning your own tours!
