Ever seen those snowboarders head for the skin track and wondered what on earth they were doing?

Splitboarding has grown in popularity significantly over the last 10 years. Born out of the need for snowboarders to access the backcountry, this technology enables snowboarders to tour like a skier yet descend in their usual fashion.

It actually started with snowboarders taking hacksaws to their boards and making their own DIY versions. As you can imagine, the results varied.

Whether your splitboarding or touring on skis, the principles of going uphill are generally the same. There are a few key skills that’ll help you save energy, climb steep faces and, most importantly, stop you sliding backwards into your unsuspecting group.
