Before he knew her, Enrique never remembered the weather. Ask him then about the snowstorm that kids hoped would cancel school, or the leaves that must have fallen, or the heat wave he assumed punctuated late summer, or the inevitable downpour that must have soaked his clothes last spring. Enrique would not be sure. But now, oh, the cold slipping in through the cracks to stiffen Enrique’s fingers above the keyboard, the perfect gray of the evening sky that says it won’t snow tonight, the wind that pushes her chin into her scarf as she reaches to ring his doorbell.
