The Journal of Radical Wonder

In The Journal of Radical Wonder, we look at the world through the lens of wonder. We are looking for beauty, art, nature, humanity, truth. We fight against cynicism and try to understand the complex nature of joy. Art. Nature. Humanity. Beauty. Truth.

After A Pedlar Selling Spectacles (1524–5), Rembrandt

A Pedlar Selling Spectacles (1524–5), Rembrandt (Public Domain)

At the fair, a peddler approaches
likely customers, a scene that might,
in Rembrandt’s later paintings, be
a bit of backdrop. The wife is nearly blind,
already seeing better with her fingers
than her eyes, her husband eager
to believe a bit of glass and horn
might work a miracle — he doesn’t
catch the peddler’s smirk.
