Hollywood, CA — Comedian Chris Rock took things way too far when he made the unconscionable decision to tell jokes during the Oscars. He was promptly which put in his place when actor Will Smith went on stage and slapped him.

The incident happened after Rock made a joke directed at Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, who has alopecia, a condition that causes hair loss, and proved that comedy can in fact go too far.

“I was totally blindsided by the whole thing. How was I supposed to know that a comedian would come on stage at an award show and make fun of the actors sitting near the stage? I don’t think that’s ever happened before” said Jada Pinkett Smith.

Jada wasn’t the only one who was shocked by Rock’s act. Writers and producers of the show were reportedly distraught backstage, desperately trying to signal to the control booth to cut the broadcast once they realized the comedian they hired was doing comedy, but of course it was too late.

“I thought he was just going to do a funny dance, like an Irish jig or something, and then he opened his mouth and I was like ‘Is anyone going to stop him?’” said one audience member.

Smith’s night went from good to great when he ended the award show by winning the Oscar for best actor for his role in King Richard.

“We weren’t even planning on giving Smith the Oscar, but after saving the day, we felt like he earned it,” said one member of the academy.

In his acceptance speech, a teary-eyed Smith spoke about how the movie was about defending your family, even if from the greatest danger of all: some light razzing.
