World Cup Observes 6,500 Moments of Silence for Construction Workers Who Died Building Stadiums
Al Khor, QA — Prior to the opening game of the 2022 World Cup between Qatar and Ecuador, the stadium observed 6,500 one-minute moments of silence, one for every migrant construction worker who died while building all the facilities needed for the World Cup.
Along with the fans in attendance, the two starting lineups became restless fairly early into the four day, 12 hour, and 20 minute silence.
Players standing at the touch line, waiting to hear their respective national anthems began to cramp up after just a few hours and had to be stretched out by the training staff. Coaches felt it best that they do a few drills to stay warm for the games start which were of course done in complete silence.
The days-long pause presents an unexpected logistical nightmare for tournament organizers as 16 games have been postponed.
Fox and other TV networks around the world who paid tens of millions for the rights to broadcast the event are currently unleashing their teams of lawyers for breach of contract as they don’t have enough networks to broadcast 16 games at once.
Many teams will ironically have to play their games on nearby recreational fields and parks rather than in the stunningly beautiful stadiums that were quite literally built on the backs of thousands of Indian and Sri Lankan men with families.
Qatar and Ecuador will have only a few hours after the completion of this game before they have to play again. They’re expected to get in a quick power nap at their immaculate hotels that were built with almost no safety precautions in mind.
