Put Your Creative Work First

It’s not about finding time, it’s about making time

Coming back from a few days off work, I had a lot on my plate. There was a writing piece that I wanted to finish up and I needed to check in with clients on deadlines. As I was opening up my inbox to see what my work load for the month would be, I realized that I was putting my clients before my needs.

One of my desired feelings for the year is discernment. I chose this word because I am notoriously bad at setting boundaries and was raised to put other people’s needs first.

Many women are rewarded for doing this.

So are marginalized people, who can receive the message that we have to fill a role to earn a place at the table. We don’t. It’s just crap messaging from the white patriarchal society that is desperate to maintain their power.

The end result of this messaging is that many of us look to fill our needs last, and it’s the first thing that gets put off for another day when life gets busy.

I’m not talking about self care or getting in our 10,000 steps or doing a 10-minute meditation.

I’m talking about the juicy stuff that matters most and how we all too often put it off to do someone else’s busywork.
