Liberty’s Crooked Crown
a poem on the poet behind the statue
It used to be
that we knew what Liberty stood for
we knew who Liberty was
she was our beacon of hope
our shining star
But now
Liberty’s crown is crooked
medieval blood libel is splashed on street corners
because Kristallnacht is everyday
Democracy is on the brink
when the lost boys and girls think
terrorism is some kind of fetish kink
But we saw Liberty shed tears on 9–11
we never thought we could pick her back up
but we did, and now when we see her crown is crooked
who will fix her crown?
Will the world fix her crown so that Emma’s words can shine?
