Priests refuse to hand over Jewish children after World War II
Dr. Fritz Finaly and his wife Anni’s luck had finally run out. They were attempting to flee France but were caught by the Gestapo.
The pair had already managed to escape from Austria after Nazi Germany had annexed the country. But now, their fortune had changed and the pair were swiftly sent to their death in Auschwitz on March 7, 1944.
It was never meant to be this way. Having already made their way across the border into France, the family felt secure. They settled in Grenoble and soon had two children, Robert and Gerald born in 1941 and 1942.
They had been living in France for two years when the Nazis conquered France. Soon, the unthinkable was beginning to creep into everyday life. Anti-Semitic laws soon prevented Fritz from practicing medicine. He knew they had to leave the country.
The Finalys left their two boys at Saint Vincent de Paul Nursery in Meylan on February 10, 1944. It was a heartbreaking decision for the young family but they felt they had no choice.
