No one is ‘Invincible’ against teenage angst, exclusive clip
Invincible is, at its core, a story about a teenager — Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) — who just happens to have superpowers. The pilot follows him in his desperate reach for super-puberty, because to a boy with the world’s most formidable hero for a father (J.K. Simmons as Nolan Grayson/Omni-Man), not having powers isn’t just disappointing. It’s disappointment.
It’s only fitting in this tale of teen angst that Mark’s best friend — William Clockwell (Andrew Rannells) — go through similar trials of adolescence. William is gay. Initially introduced as a comedic footnote in the pilot (nothing like having a crush on your best friend’s dad’s secret super-identity!), the audience met his love interest, Rick, last Friday.
Rick (Jonathan Groff) is a cyborg now, a first heartbreak further punctuated by the news that his best friend is teen superhero Invincible that could have saved the day.
So, thanks to Amazon Studios, The Jump Off finds Mark and William hashing it out over a helping of burgers and fries:
Will their friendship survive super-hormonal superhuman adolescence? To find out, catch Invincible’s latest episode Friday, April 23rd on Amazon Prime.
