The theft of focus

Photograph by Laurence Demaison, 2004

When your pulse tries to flee
And each heartbeat gets lost.
When your gut tries to scream
But only attains a goofy mumble.

You knew your goals
You fixed your plans
But the quivers return
Crawling up your arms
Pressing on your chest
Rupturing your throat.

Side to side, chew by chew,
Bruises pile up on the calendar.
It’s inside you.
It’s sitting still
As your voice breaks
As your life crumbles.

Numbing legs and numbing thoughts
Tasks blend with the wallpaper
Screeching jaws, exploding mess,
Still no one sees the ghosts around you.

With a force that leaves attention blind
And renders taste amnesic
Corroding from within
Nights become more and more elastic
As you let anxiety creep.
