Depression feels like

Ascending the mountain,
we tread slowly.
The day ahead of us,
is a daunting story.

Completing a simple chore,
is a step towards the peak.
The foggy terrain,
makes our literacy weak.

Nodding and smiling,
we acknowledge people on our way.
But you will seldom hear us speak;
For our voices are drowned..
the noisy wind blowing in our brain.

Confidence is something,
we strive to regain.
Every day is a mountain,
waiting to be soared again.

Our minds’ attention takes a toll:
A crowded place of thoughts,
down a narrow hall.
The past, the present, the future — all running amok!
It’s hard to find the path,
among this noisy flock.

We become robots..
waiting to be programmed;
As if the frontal lobe has a buggy code.
Our cognitive abilities and expressions — dysfunctional.
Our thoughts and feelings require testimonials.

We walk; we talk; we dine; we toil; we globetrot;
Masquerading through life,
as if it were a festive ball.
But deep inside,
we are fighting a war.
Ensuring the diabolical force,
doesn’t suck it all.

In the wide chasm between the onset and realization:
It seeps into our being,
through the cracks in our lives.

Spreading its roots,
it becomes part of our living; our identity; our personality;
It feeds on our emotions, relationships, feelings, memories.
And all we are left with — is complete numbness.
Our lives spiraling down a black hole..

Please note —although I have generalized the symptoms of anxiety and depression, not everybody experiences the above symptoms. What applies to one person may not be applicable to another. Unfortunately, depression is not just sadness — it’s more than that and has a wide range of symptoms. You can learn more about it at ADAA and Nami.

You deserve to live your life to the fullest and there are professionals out there to help you out. Please don’t hesitate to get the help!
