it was a mistake to think
we knew fire
a delicate stick dipped
in red, one quaint pageant
dressed in applause

all the meanwhile
we lit our words
like feral torches
the heat unguarded
scorching the earth

eventually we discover
fire was only sleeping
we are always
the ones who burn
