I.
A woman and a man
glance at each other
when a car honks
like a church organ.

II.
She lies prostrate,
tip of her chin
to the tip of the waves.
This is morning.

III.
What would you do
if you learned
you were but a shard
of a broken seashell?

IV.
Would you pay attention
to the little boy
playing alone in the water
like a little bird?

V.
She stands up,
tip of her big toe to the tip of the water.
The brown water.
She stares into the blue.

VI.
As if a wave could send
her off with one great thrust.
