butterfly in air
crushed beneath a heavy shoe
life is rarely fair
mouse the small cat slew
love offering left by door
eviscerated
hungry child wants more
food, but cannot be sated
then, of course, falls ill
genocide and lies
leader must find more to kill
world closes its eyes
hardships fall like yellowed leaves
reader sighs and then she grieves

This sonnet obviously combines the 5–7–5 syllabic structure of the haiku with the 14-line rhyming scheme of a sonnet.
