Slurpee Bible

About an hour after sunrise I passed a man in a green and purple suit

He was standing on a Hell’s Kitchen corner slapping the pages of an old open Bible and preaching on Rabshakeh and Sennacherib

He proclaimed that all the fires of war that had raged since Lincoln were nothing but a spent match compared to the Lord’s firepower

God had laid waste to the Syrian horde in the days of Hezekiah and he would do even greater works today if men would only worship him in Spirit and in Truth

It was one of those cool June mornings with a lazy breeze and the blood was pressed into my sleepless head so tight I could taste iron in my nasal cavity

I’d been up for two days and the dam was cracking

One slip and an ocean would spill out of my nose and ears all over the pavement

Just then, a rainbow-colored Slurpee came out of the sky and hit the Preacher’s green and purple suit

Then it slopped out all over the pages of the old open Bible

A group of teens with Foot Locker bags laughed and ran

And the flock of fanny-pack locusts on the corner sang with joy

The Preacher said, “Goddamnit all.”

Then slammed the old open Bible into a trash can and stormed off

While the sticky book

Dripped

I pushed all the red-steel into the veins of my head with eye-bulging strain

Praying that something would break or burst or hemorrhage into a Holy Aneurysm

It didn’t.
