‘I am not a failure’

It’s easy to dismiss the insecurity of others

Choosing a pep talk instead

Telling them how amazing they are

In the same breath we laugh wryly

Expressing the failures we are

I’m guilty of it

And so are you

The ease at which the clearest of mirrors

Cracks our self-image

Yet our eyes could not see the success of others any clearer

Is it mere perspective?

A faux pas mildly amusing to spectators

But haunting us for weeks to come

Or is it a symptom of our inherent egoism?

That’s up to you to decide

And me
