Life’s aftermath
lingers long and glum,
decades after
living is done.

Now you finally know
what you really wanted,
what you meant to do,
too late to attempt it.

All those things
you left undone
haunt you beneath
a dying sun
in a chilly world
belonging to
the hopeful young.

A world you can only see
from the distance
of the last century.

It comes to this.
It comes to this:

Live your life before
the closing
of that final door.
