Making Winter Jealous
An Experiment
the first thing we
did when spotting the tree
was make a wish
I don’t know —
seemed like the right
moment to embrace
the romantic setting
he agreed, autumn had
sunk her teeth into us
& we were hers now
we left our marks
carved our initials in
the sleeping tree and
watched the deer
gallivant within the
woods, carrying mischief
on their backs
humbling ourselves before
the afternoon wind,
we found a divisiveness
among the two-legged
and four-legged animals
who was smarter — was
the argument
we took no sides
nature is adamant about
recognition
I looked at him
he looked at me
autumn bowed before us
with deep intent
she would have
her way with us
once and for all
winter would be
jealous
