Sally awoke, cold and on the ground, gasping for breath. She felt across her body for blood but found nothing wrong.

Still she cried. Her entire body shook with the spasms of her sobbing.

Then Billy was next to her, rubbing her shoulders. “Sally, what’s wrong?”

“I thought I blew up. But Kitty must have saved us.”

Sally caught her breath and looked around. It was dark out. Had she been knocked out?

“What are you talking about?” Billy asked.

Sally sat up. They were in the meadow where they had been left by their parents. “How did we get here?”

“We hiked here this morning,” Billy said. “We’ve been waiting for Mom or Dad to come back.”

“That’s not possible. First there was the catapult, and then we chased the dogs, and then we fought Big Baby.”

Billy shook his head. “Nope. Just us here shivering and starving in the meadow. And that thing in the woods watching us.”

“Wait, what?” Sally followed his gaze to the edge of the meadow where a pair of eyes glowed.

“It’s been watching us all night, ever since the sun went down.”
