Sewing And Alterations

A life made from ruins,
salvaged from memory.
We stitch it together
as we saunter along.
A web of allusions,
teasingly recalled fragments,
a cubist past,
patched into narrative,
sewn into the life
we pretend we lived,
the person we like
to imagine we are.
We apply this pattern
to save ourselves
into being someone
we can live with,
a comfortable garment
we wear with a smile
to face the day’s
difficult uncertainty,
not who we are,
but what we wish.
